The water in BioShock is awesome.

Well, I've checked most of the gaming stores in Oslo today, and no one of them had it! Then, when I finnaly manages to get home, I finds out that it will be released in Europe on the 24th, not the 21th like in the US! DAMN YOU USA! WHEN WILL YOU ARROGANT YANKEES OPEN YOUR EYES AND SEE THAT EUROPE IS SUPERIOR TO YOUR COUNTRY?!

Speaking of different release schedules in different places, Finland will be getting Hellgate: London a full day before the rest of the Europe.

Save your money and get a 360 instead, which will likely cost less than what it would to get you a proper PC to run Bioshock. It's a great game and it actually has a very rogue-like quality to it that carried over from SS2.

I have no console, and (probably) never will, because I have compy, and I put my compy's upgrades into priority over a console. Probably because my friends have consoles. Anyway, I get the older consoles up to PS1 with emulators, and there are only some console-exclusive things I really WANT to play. IE, Final Fantasy, and probably Mass Effect.

I've heard Bioshock DRM is pretty restrictive. Max 2 installs per code, so if you have to reinstall Windows (hardware failures can also happen) just once those are used up, and if you want to play on a new machine in a few years time, not possible.

Of course, this works only if their DRM servers are working. It seems currently are not. Which means you can't play the game at all.

Hurray for DRM. Perhaps I'll just get a 'clean' version, you know, from the sick bird and stuff.

It seems that its time for an upgrade again. Why?
I installed the demo. First off, the mouse cursor was gone. Them, when I ran it and got to the drowning part, I seen a whole lot of gray stuff, them only black instead of the water, models and lighthouse... Now Im sad...

You're luckier than me. I was surprised the intro movies ran at all. Well, after those, the game crashed.

There is no rootkit.

There is a lot of slightly too hard to remove DRM protection on it, and the launch was a joke with the activation servers failing, and only 5 reinstalls is an arbitrary limit, and I'm not defending those things in any way, but seriously, there is no rootkit.

There is a hard-to-remove registry key from SecuROM. There are undeletable files with the demo. But that are not rootkits. They are not rewriting kernel logic and they cannot be abused like the Sony stuff could be abused.

Well, the original usage of the word rootkit to describe whatever evil comes with Bioshock is found here:

However, note the comments. The author of the article himself as much as admits it's not a rootkit. He only used the word for search engine optimization.

Bioshock comes with DRM. Especially on the demo, this is outrageous, but it's stupid on the game too. But don't go calling things rootkits when they aren't, please. From Wikipedia: "A rootkit is a set of software tools intended to conceal running processes, files or system data from the operating system." It does none of these things. It's a normal Windows service, be it hard to delete and installed without user knowledge. I don't approve, but don't make it worse than it is.

even if bioshock doesn't install a rootkit, per se, i think the main argument ought to focus on whether the hidden programs (rookit or otherwise) that bioshock installs is harmful or not.

I don't think I would want my computer to have any hidden undeletable programs, whatever they actually do. It might depend, though, for there are things I would probably let 'em stay on my compy for.

Finished. Completely, utterly worth every single second. This game is absolutely lovely.

I don't think mere words can describe it.

Though to be absolutely fair, the middle part of the game was best. Near the end, there aren't a lot of new elements to keep it interesting, although they try hard. But that's nitpicking. Go get this game (and a computer that can run it).
