Meaning of Var' Equinalin? | Legacy of this game in my memory

Oscar (guest) 21 days ago
Hello there!

My name is Oscar. I remember playing Notrium when I was 11. Now I'm 29.

One thing that I always remember from Notrium is the name of the starship: Var' Equinallin.

However, I haven't been able to find the meaning of this name anywhere. Not even ChatGPT knows.

This is what ChatGPT says about this name:

"Var' Equinallin" does not seem to be a common phrase in any known language, but breaking it down:

"Var" could mean different things depending on the language. It means "war" in Turkish, "spring" (the season) in Old Norse, and in some fantasy settings, it can imply "lord" or "great."

"Equinallin" resembles "equine," which relates to horses, or "equinox," which refers to the balance of day and night. The suffix "-allin" might suggest something noble, grand, or related to a constructed fantasy language.

So it has no idea, and that is why I'm asking Ville, what does it mean?

Also, I wanted to let you know that in any game I play where I have a ship or a spaceship, I tend to name it after that spacecraft in honour to the game of my childhood memories

See you!

Hi there Oscar, nice to hear from you! And naming your ships is an awesome way to remember Notrium, I'm going to start naming my ships Vindicator in memory of Star Control II. You're not the first to be puzzled by the name. Var'Equinallin is an anagram, specifically of us developers Ville and Quanrian. I think Quanrian came up with that part, and I was similarly baffled by it when I first heard of it.
