Righto, I see electricity as a part of Steam gadgets as long as the Mechanical isn't over shadowed by the Electrical part of the Gizmo.
    (Liky link -->http://www.dself.dsl.pipex.com/MUSEUM/museum.htm).

Might post that Character in some near future if no one objects...No? Good.

Terry Pratchett's Discworld has a same sort of "internet" as the one described in the link (optical telegraphs). Cool, innit?

    So here is:

    Name: Dumar Bolev

    Gender: Male

    Age: About 20

Appearance: Short, cold brown hair, Slightly tanned skin, green eyes, about 170 cm short, and of course a goatee.

Languages: Ironika (Sounds loosely like Latin)

Persona: Abit sarcastic and stingy, stubborn at best, optimistic. Tends to be a bumbling fool.

History: Born in the Citystate of Ironika, 8 years after The Revolution, Dumar grew up atending to his studies and tinkering around with all kinds of mechanical gadgets. After finishing his education he tried to get a funding for a Workshop as he wanted to make a career for himself as a Spark(Inventor) as his father and grandfather had done.

Sadly the funding was denied from him and Dumar was forced to make a living by doing part-time jobs, mainly something that had to do with mechanical gadgeds. Fortunately Ironika was building itself after The Revolution, so there was need of workers. Dumar was given some apprentice work, for he was too inexperienced to be given any proper jobs.

When Dumar turned 18 he started to get more proper work and he spent some time working and building the many Generatoriums that worked on geothermal heat and the steam rail network.

Currently Dumar is out of work as the Citystate of Ironika has been build and there has been little need for large workforces since then. Now he is sitting on a bench at the central park gazing at the sky and wondering what to do now.

    Posessions:
    - Brown leather jacket*
    - Leather gloves**
    - Shoulder bag***
    - Leather boots
    - Goggles
    - 200 Polets(currensy of Ironika)
    - Round glasses****

    * The jacket is an Trenchcoat with them fancy buttons and such.

** The gloves are brown heavy duty leather that run up to the elbow and end at the first finger joint.

*** The bag contain tools and some other small stuff.

**** The glasses are used when not working and have a small side loop that can be bended over the right eye to provide a larger picture of an close object.

And so it is done. I might have copied some of Grim's sheet style but it looked so good to me so it had to be done.

An a Happy Year of 2007!

I don't think you CAN be Russian in this new AETAS (what with there being no Russia to start with ).

But that ain't stopping you from creating a Russian-LIKE character.

EDIT: Before we start off with the RP/story/whatev, I think we oughta get the locations of the players on the map, not to forget the known factions, cities, etc.

So, grab Gemini's latest map, and edit it with the location thing of whatever faction your player is in, and do post some relevant info on the faction while your at it (I'll post mine as soon as I get back home).

EDIT2: Ok, here we go. Edited map is here, showing the locations of Ürbenschtock and the observatory Ipsen is currently in. Also, due to the more-or-less indefinite nature of Überwelsch, Ürbenschtok is sometimes spelled with a "ck" at the end instead of just a "k". Now post your edits!

EDIT3: And now for some more info about the Überwaldian empire and the city of Ürbenschtok...

The citizens of Ürbenschtok can be divided into different "classes" (scientists, workers, and so-called nobility), which all have their place in the system.

The classes do not automatically come from your heritage, but from the level of your education. For instance, nobility refers to those who study law and politics in general, workers to those who mostly do heavy manual labour (such as fixing pipes and installing new boilers and so on), and scientists generally focus on mathematics, astronomy, and also the finer aspects of mechanics, steamwork and clockwork. So, in essence, you can start out as a worker, and later study the law, you can jump right into being a "noble" (which doesn't really mean the same nobility as there was in the victorian era or whenever-it-was, but instead comes from an old Überwelsch word, nolbech, which later on twisted into "noble"), which doesn't mean you are no longer a worker (leaving a class takes a few weeks, and usually there's a lot of paperwork involved).

Also, most clocksmiths and other people who work on small and intricate designs have the status of a scientist (there are rare exceptions where people have the skill without the education, in which case they might be awarded with the title of an honorary scientist in the field of whatever they happen to do).

There are, of course, both rich and poor people in the Überwaldian empire, although even the poorest have a place to live (provided by the government in extreme cases) and food to eat (also provided by the government in extreme cases). According to recent polls, the quality of life of both the richer and the poorer differ only minimally, and the overall QOL is quite good.

The pollution from the factories was initially so bad that people needed to wear gas masks when walking out in the streets, but due to a breakthrough in filtering technologies in the past decade, the pollution dropped dramatically (and even more now that the steam cells were starting to become slightly more common and cheap to manufacture).

Also, the Überwaldian Empire doesn't REALLY have an emperor. Instead, there are three high-ranked individuals from each class that are chosen every three years (the Überwaldians, as you can see, are rather fixated with the number 3).

That's all I can be arsed to think up for now.

When you all have uploaded whatever you have done to the map, I can integrate them into the original one, so that it shows every location too.

Welcome to Ironika, in the not so sunny Arctic!

Here is Ironika in the planet Ironikans call Ferrum(Means: Clad in Iron). Ironika is an Citystate that separated from the Schartchwald Republic 31 years ago.

The Republic considered the Ironikans a lesser people and used them as slave labor for nearly 200 years, but the Revolution(Also referred to as The Liberation Day) freed the Ironikan people from slavery.

Religion in Ironika is heavily themed around Ancestor worship. One must pay proper respect for those who have been before them, in small token left to the Animus Saxum, witch is a gravestone that is used to convey the token to the ancestor.

All dead are cremated so that the Nature(Soul for the lack of a better term) may leave the body and the tokens are also burned so that the ancestor may receive his gift from the living in the underworld.

Ironika is constantly shadowed by a prospect of revenge and reclaiming by the Republic, so they have a fairly strong military, though it is quite small.

Ironika's population is estimated to be close to 1.2 million. Relations with other Nation's are strained, mainly because many do not want to make an potential enemy out of Schartchwald Republic and Ironika is somewhat isolated by geocraphy. Relations with the native tribes are warying: Some hold the ironikans in high regard, while many see them as another trespasser in their lands.

The only Ironikan airship Baiulus is nearly the only way to get to Ironika and back. The flightpath goes between Ironika and Ürbenschtock.

I'll post some more when it becomes relevant.

Edit: Adding more to the info.

The guality af air in Ironika is average, but it can be worse. The reason for this air quality is some what a source of pride for the Industrial Council(Ironika's Goverment). The main source of energy is geothermal heat that runs the massive Steam Generatorium's that in turn supply high powered steam to the city. The water reguired for the creation of steam is gotten from the Arctica ice, witch is mined by great steam shovels.

The Industrial Counsil is compromised of the representatives from the Guild's. The Guild's select a representative to the Counsil every year amongst the guild. The goverment type would be best described as Liberal Democratic Socialist.

Daily life in Ironika is constantly shadowed by the fear of retribution from the Schartchwald Republic, but people don't let it bother them much. There is little if any poverty in Ironika mainly because every Ironikan knows firsthand what feels like to be poor, so the goverment does it's best to keep the QOL high.

To an outsider the Ironikan's seem at first clanse to be laconik, stubborn and quite spiritual people. Some would call Ironikan's isolationalists, but that is caused by geocraphical obstacles, not by their own choise.

Ironika's Industry is in good health, but there isn't that much industry in Ironika because of space limitations. Ironika can only manufacture 1-2 Steamer Cells a year and those that are comleted are used as replacements in Baiulus.

    ¤¤¤

I'd like that itemization is kept at low, because it will ruin the fun if every nation has an abundance of nearly everything, especialy the SteamCell technology should be some what rare.

    1) The bold thing WOULD'VE worked if you had BBCode enabled in your profile.
    2) So you were from outside the initial playing world? An interesting idea (which I happened to use in the previous AETAS).
    3) There are no empire players in the Steampunk Edition of AETAS, sez I. Besides, players with only a single character can enjoy the game better, anyway.

I think batteries are a good idea. Steam technology, indeed, is NOT as primitive as originally thought. Many devices can be powered by steam generators or by steam itself. Steam technology can do spectacular things. The only reason we do not utilize it is that it requires large amounts of fuel and, no matter how renewable the fuel is, it is still inefficient. The good thing is, of course, that we can ignore real physics and develop our own world where steam is the most efficient form of energy.

As to where Rhenna's people are... I'm too lazy to mark the map, so look at the Crater Gulf. You'll see two bright green islands. One has some little red dots and the other does not. The one that does not, which is in the northeast of the Crater Gulf, is the island where Rhenna's people live. They are nomadic and migrate constantly, so their domain is, essentially, the entire island. Other than Rhenna's people, the island is uninhabited by humans.

The crash site of the steamship is located in the rough center of the island, and is home to many, many, many wolves. Rhenna's people have no mode of transportation that is capable of crossing sea or air. They only have small skiff-boats (water transport) and steamskiffs (air transport) that are only capable of crossing large rivers or moving across the island. Strong air currents over open sea prevents their steamskiffs from getting very far away. In order for Rhenna to leave her island she has to build her own transportation from resources found in the hulk-den steamship wreck.

The supposed crash site of the vessel that supposedly brought Rhenna's people to Algioth (I'm calling the planet Algioth unless anyone objects.) is in the center of the Crater Gulf, in-between the two dark green islands (one is curved and long and the other is rather small, both are heavily populated) there.

I've already told you as much of Rhenna's history and her people's history that is relevant. I'm not writing a book on their history unless it is necessary.

My computer is in for repairs, so I won't be able to use photoshop to ad any of the locations in near future. If someone could do this for me(NO msPaint), it would be no problem, of course.

BTW, I might upload information about the Areons later today.

If we're going to pretend that Steam technology can do pretty much whatever the hell normal technology can do, why even use steam technology? To me, the whole appeal of steam punk technology is that it is different and would be a fun and innovative setting for an RP, not just some half-assed attempt to put a different name on the same damn thing. My opinion of where we're trying to take this "Steampunk," is that it's a bunch of bullshit.

With all this indulgences to special tech, we're going to head down the same path that we did in EEToEE, and Aetas, and it will die out. The technological crap in such extrememes, takes away from the RP element and encourages people to get wrapped up in a "Ooh, hey, that's a neat gizmo, let's talk about that instead of RP" kind of mode.
    #
    Zombie 17 years ago
Steam technology is powered by steam, Shingo. It is non-electronic (except for very basic components) and is mostly, if not entirely, mechanical. It is very different from modern technology and it /is/ a challenge to figure out how to make effective devices in this setting.

I simply said that in this world we are creating, steam is the most efficient form of power generation. That explains why we are using steam technology instead of nuclear, coal, or other sources of power. It also sets some of the physical laws of the land so as to prevent people from circumventing the intended RP point of only allowing advanced steam technology, rudimentary electronic components (such as coils, magnets, and other such things that can be made of them), and basic electrical components. Steam technology is mostly mechanical and will stay as such.

An example is Rhenna's Alt Umai. It uses a miniature steam core (if you don't know what that is then maybe you should watch Steamboy) to provide power to a minature winch. This can easily be done with mechanical parts. It does not utilize any electronic parts and is manipulated by pressing simple plug-and-spring style buttons on the hilt of the weapon. Just because it isn't ancient and archaic, doesn't mean it isn't steam technology. You can build a computer using mechanical components, but it would probably be around the size of a building and would probably only be a glorified calculator.

Next time, Shingo, I suggest you actually look into your accusations before you fly off the handle and start slinging attitude around.

I read that this guy designed a tape reader with vacuum relays and gears in the 1890s, but it required too much precision to work for real back then.

So there's no way of having things like the Triage from Slouching Towards Bedlam (an IF I happen to like very, very much)?
    #
    Amarth 17 years ago
I don't know... If the technology advances enough, parts could become small. Not as small as with electricity, perhaps, but a computer with the power of say the Commodore should be possible in a case the size we use now for our computers. Triage is not that advanced a thing, mind you. A bit of storage and a bit of processing power on wheels.

And functionality is not limited. Computers are all the same. Once you have (an approximation of) a Turing machine, you can calculate everything a normal computer can do. These principles remain, whether you use electricity, steam, water or ants.
