Just kidding I imagine that is how the gaming industry would work if owned by the mafia however . "Hey Joey, go mix up some cement, it seems EA has beaten us in quarterly sales, we'll have to go into 'negotiations' with them."

I laughed so hard when I read that...

Anyway, I think I have a basic plot for my game that doesn't have any contradictions with itself. As soon as I get the engine working I'll post a screenshot.

Lol, it's actually more likely to be the reverse, i mean in terms of honor it would be a step up for EA to begin hiring armed thugs to eliminate opposing companies.

There is currently a 50% chance of me finishing my game before the deadline, but I'm going to finish it eventually anyway. I probably wont have the actually 'content' finished, but probably will have the engine itself. Its going to be really modable, to the extent of notrium, where the actual main game is a mod itself. So essentially, I could have the game finished, just with no content.

BTW all I'll be going on an extended trip to someplace there is no internet, i may even move there, so you might never hear from me again.

I recommend doing prototype versions. It's always helped me a lot. It's no shame making a version that doesn't do anything yet. Heck, I'll probably be releasing a prototype that does nothing in a few months.

Yea, thats what I was going to do soon too, just a 'tech' test to see if I can basically do what I want to do with the engine I'm using. I currently don't like the way it handles the keys though, so I may have to write that myself. (Not like its hard anyway) But my first version will have no modding capabilities, just an engine test, then I will start again. Maybe have a prototype before the end of the comp, with a small story line a couple of star systems and a couple of missions..
I don't think I have metnioned what I am going to make so I will now.
It will be a space sim, a cross between freelancer and hardwar (probably influenced by others too) only it will be 2D. You will be able to mod everything, make your own star systems, planets, bases, ships, weapons, trade goods, trade routes, and hopefully (fingers crossed) plot missions (so modders can make their own plots) however these plot missions will probabbly rely on hard coded freelance missions (like the list off effects in notrium) such as escorting, trade runs, dog fights etc, only they will be able to vary quite alot as you can decide where to go, how many enemies etc.
All these ideas have been running around in my head for a couple of months now so I think it is almost ready, as soon as I'm finished working out this new engine I can start.

EDIT: I just realised I probably only have a 20% chance of getting it done now, as I'm off to uni in a couple of weeks and I wont have a pc for probably a month or so until we get another pc for home. But I'm still in the comp, just in case.

Don't worry about taking a break from it. People often stop their projects when they no longer have time for them. I've taken up to two month holidays from development, returning to work later. It can be done if you document what you're doing well enough for you to pick up later.

If you don't get anything done to the end of the comp. you could enter it into the next comp.

NeoGangster, it sounds like it's between you and MageKing now, i would enter if my crappy engine didn't crash every time i try NPC Interactions that aren't attacking the player(i.e dialoge).

just work on your engine and maybe you will get it ready before the end of the comp.

Okay, I have a setting for my space-RPG. It will be set in the same universe as my book, so I'll just use that plot. You'll even be able to meet all the main characters! Or, rather, all the main characters except for Brannen, as he's dead.

Anyway, I'm still in the planning stages so far. I intend for the engine to be quite complicated in order to do what I want, so it could take some time before I have some screenshots. But as soon as something comes up, I'll post it.

Good luck NeoGangster, and hoping your game is better than mine (considering yours will be on PC, not on TI-92+)

On that note, your game had better be better than mine. Otherwise I'd have to kill you for not taking advantage of your platform.

OK I'm becoming a bit more optimistic about my game. I haven't done a thing in about 5 weeks (except for trying to run it on another machine and crashing it very badly ). But now we're starting the new semester, and we have very few courses to attend. That means a lot of time suddenly appearing in front of me .
I am not promising anything, but I'll be trying a bit harder to get it finished. I know it is possible, I only have to start coding .
But previous exams thought me school has to be on the first place... Not that the results will be that bad, but there were some tense moments I want to avoid in the future . Anyway... Expect more news within a week from here. If I haven't start coding by then, I probably never will. (coming to think of it, I probably won't do a thing tomorrow... neither wednesday... thursday perhaps... probably nothing friday and defenitely nothing in the weekend... errrr damn . That's a good start.)

    EDIT:
As of now (about 22 hours after this post... I won't be double posting ), progress is being made . All cheer! The keyboard input is finally done. Mouse input is next. Then some more about output (writing text to the screen etc... OpenGL stuff). And then I think I can finally start coding the game... About time the fun part started .

ADH:KLSUG:KJSHDLGJSDH!!!!! SON OF A ****IN BURGIT!

I was attempting to do a really cool subroutine that allowed me to calculate where a line would go, without actually drawing a line. This would let me have something travel along a path by moving it slowly along where the line would go. Using this, I would let the player use either projectile weapons or beam weapons. But the stupid calculator won't let me do it! **** **** **** ****!!!!!

And no, I doubt any of you could help. I'm probably the only one on the message board with a TI-92+. I just wish the ****ing routine would work. Right now it sort of... doesn't. I'm thinking of scrapping it and doing something different. I suppose I could remove projectile weapons all together...

For projectiles, why not just store the position and the speed? This is about equal to a parametric equation of a line... Every frame you add your speed vector to your position vector, and miraculous your projectile will follow a line...

But, I believe you know better than me what you're talking about... So I'm sorry if I insult you by saying something as clear as this .

Actually, that's what I am doing. It calculates the x speed and y speed based on the starting location and the ending location, and draws the projectile as moving along the line. But the problem is that the #(%*&# TI-BASIC keeps messing it up, and the projectile launches off in some random direction. I'm just going to scrap the current system and rewrite it better, so I hope it'll get rid of the problem.

I remember programming the TI-82 myself... You had to be very aware of what you were doing, when calcutating x and y, because the pixels were labeled in aother way then the carthesian coordinate system, so when you had to mix the two together, it became a bit of a mess. In the end, I managed to figure it out, but yeah there were some unexpected things along the way .

As for my game... it is going along. I'm still very close to position 0, but it goes along. Problem is I have no idea how much time I'll be needing for creating the other parts of the game, because of the almost zero experience I have . Really hard to predict how much work needs to be done, and how fast it will be done. But I'll see... And hope .

Right but the concept behind TI-BASIC remains the same... But, okay, I don't know a thing about the TI-92+. Good luck with your game.

For me, I finally got bitmap fonts working... Not htat it was that hard, but there was an annoying bug in the blending functions I couldn't figure out at first. It works now .
There is no game, but I like what I have created till now: SDL does the job very well. OpenGL is very hard to learn, but once you have everything under control, it works sweet. Rotating, scaling, translating, blending of sprites... I love it .
Now for animations... That will be a bit of thinking . But I'll figure it out.
Once I have animations, a bit better input handling and a lot better entity code, I'll try to release a 'techdemo' of some sorts... I think within one to two weeks. Expect nothing big, more some sort of NeHe-like demo .

Right but the concept behind TI-BASIC remains the same... But, okay, I don't know a thing about the TI-92+.
While much more powerful, the TI-92+'s TI-BASIC has it's drawbacks.

There are two types of programs. The first type is "Programs." These are what everyone's used to. The second type is "Functions." Functions are not as useful as they might sound. They have very few commands available to them, but they can return a value. Good for random name generation and stuff like that, but useless for anything else.

Second difference: You can type commands straight up. In the 82, 83, 83+, 83+ SE series (and I suppose anything with an 80), you had to retrieve commands from the various menues or the catalog. with the 92+, you just type it out. This means you can also have eight-letter-named variables, increasing possibilities a hundred-fold. Also, lists can be comprised of more than just numbers (so you can have lists of strings), any variable can be any data type, and there are a **** of a lot more commands.

    THE DRAWBACKS:

Assumed multiplication isn't as present. Typing (3.141592653589R^2H will get you a completely different answer on the TI-92+ than on the 80s series. It will give you PI*r^(2*H). Putting two letters together like XY forms a new variable called "xy," so no using that to multiply X*Y anymore. Also, calling a variable that doesn't exist doesn't return 0... it returns the variable name. Like an eight-letter string without quotemarks. Really messes up calculations sometimes...

But there are so many advantages that this seems negligable, until you hit this major flaw:

True and False are THEIR OWN SEPERATE VALUES. You can't expect true to be non-zero and false to be zero, they are actually their own values. So saying (1=1)=True gives the result of True, while (1=1)/=0 gives the result of True, but (1/=1)=0 gives the result of False. If you've ever relied on true and false being numbers on an 80 series calculator, you'll understand.

Just a bit of background of the language I'm programming in.

I don't see why not, it's a tool same as everything else. I recommend doing a maximum amount of your own content, and not using the sprites that come with the program.
